Captain Joe Riley is a Ranger qualified Infantry officer in the U.S. Army and a China specialist. He was born on a small farm in East Tennessee, where he regularly returns (often with his friends from China) to ride horses and hunt. He studied Chinese at the University of Virginia, and then completed a Masters and Doctorate in International Relations at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes and Truman Scholar. At Oxford, Joe won his department’s award for the top thesis. He has worked on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in the intelligence community, and deployed to Afghanistan, Korea, and Thailand. He recently completed his first manuscript, THE GREAT GAMBLE: Washington’s Ill-Fated Attempt to Reform Beijing.
Joe is happily married to Dr. Rachel Riley, and lives in Tennessee, where he is assigned to the 101st Airborne.
